3MWp Solar, South32 Cannington Mine, McKinlay Qld
Custom FM 89×2600 and FM 114×2600
This 3MW PV facility at the South32 Cannington Mine was commissioned by EDL and contributes to the objectives of South32’s Climate Change Strategy. The system was designed by SunSHIFT (a subsidiary of Laing O’Rourke) and is the world’s first pre-fabricated modular and moveable solar plant for large-scale electricity generation. Our foundation system was selected as the preferred footing method as our ground screws are easily removed and relocated for re-use, in line with the relocatable nature of the facility.
We installed 1,530 custom designed ground screws for the project. We experienced extremely hard soil conditions on site which required pre-drilling via our DTH hammer drilling equipment. Our ground screws were installed 900mm proud, providing both the footing and post for the single post cantilever frame. Pull tests were undertaken on site and the tension loads achieved were well in excess of those required by the project engineer. The inverter stations and 32 tonne substation are also mounted on our ground screws.
The facility now powers the operations accommodation, village and airport. The solar farm is the second largest solar installation in a remote, off-grid mining operation in Australia and the first to be integrated into a gas-fired power station.
